BBQ fest is over and detoxing can begin for most who attend the event. Smoked bologna seemed to be a popular choice this year in addition to the usual ribs, wings and shoulder that are usually sampled by team visitors. Many would say the most disappointing part of the festival was the heavy rains on Friday afternoon, but the real answer was the weak performance of David Allan Coe. Karaoke singers could have carried his tunes better.
If you ever get the opportunity to have dinner or drinks in the basement of Midtown's Bhan Thai, take advantage of the rare occurrence. It is an intimate room, stocked with a full bar and the full menu is available. Used mostly for special events, the basement occasionally opens up for bad weather days and there is talk of it opening more in the winter when it is too cold to use the Bhan Thai patio.

Big Star Tribute, Wedding DJ
Big Star's last live performance will be Saturday night at the Levitt Shell. Special guests for the finale include R.E.M's Mike Mills, Superdrag's John Davis and more. Should be a great show. Let's hope the weather holds off. Tickets are still available.

Memphis Beat, BBQ Fest
TBS and TNT have been promoting the new series Memphis Beat starring Jason Lee. Many Memphians may be excited to see a police-themed television series based in Memphis, but they will be quickly disappointed when they notice most, if not all, of the filming was done in New Orleans. Either way, it should be fun to watch the series and see how Memphis is portrayed. The pilot episode is set to run on TNT on June 22. Check your local listing for channel and time information.

BBQ Fest, World Cocktail Week
After a weekend of beautiful weather, it appears that rain is in the forecast for most of BBQ fest weekend. The lone exception is Thursday. A 40% chance of scattered thunderstorms is currently projected for Friday and Saturday. Rain won't slow most of the festival hard core fans, so there will still be plenty of fun to be had.
This week is also World Cocktail Week. Bars and restaurants around the country are celebrating by promoting better understanding and appreciation of the art of the cocktail and its history, and responsible drinking. As usual, Memphis is lagging behind. Come on Memphis bar and restaurant owners, get on the ball. If any bars are celebrating, please let us know.

Cinco De Mayo
Lots of Cinco de Mayo parties today. The obvious hot spots will be Mexican restaurants, especially at Cafe Ole and Happy Mexican. Don't look past your favorite watering holes. Its safe to say all bars will have some type of Cinco de Mayo special. There should be great crowds at the new Swanky's Taco Shop (Walrus playing) and at Kooky Canuck (great drink specials). One recommendation, stay away from national chains like On The Border. Support your local restaurants.

Lots Of Food, Zac Brown
The Commercial Appeal had an great article late last week about the best hamburgers in Memphis. The writers were pretty much dead on with Alex's and did a good job bringing some lesser known burger hot spots to the mainstream. The article also has inspired a weekly Memphis burger tour. There goes the diet.
A couple of new places have finally opened after weeks of anticipation. Swanky's Taco Shop's newest location on Poplar near Colonial (old Atlanta Bread Company) and El Toro Loco on the corner of Poplar and Collins (old Los Compadres space) opened last week. The new Swanky's location will be perfect for a good burrito followed up by an ice cold beer at The Bobcat.
On a somewhat sad note, Overton Square's Le Chardonnay is closing after a 17 year run. Plans are to close the restaurant in a few weeks and quickly reopen as an Italian restaurant.

No Playoffs For Grizzlies, Tea Party Rappers?
The Memphis Grizzlies end their 2009-10 season Wednesday night with a road loss to Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder. After a much hyped off season, that included the acquisition of the highly overrated Allen Iverson, Grizzlies fans were hoping for a return to the playoffs. Iverson quickly skipped town and the team started to show improvement. The Grizzlies finished two games below .500 with a 40-42 record, a 26 game improvement over the prior season.
53% more wins have may have some fans excited, but others are concerned about which players will be returning next season. Rudy Gay and recently acquired Ronnie Brewer are both restricted free agents. Brewer may stay, but several reports are indicating the Gay will jump ship if the opportunity is offered. If Gay leaves, management needs to find a comparable player to replace his production. Lebron James? Not going to happen, but there will be other quality free agents available if the Grizzlies are willing to spend the cash.
Head coach Lionel Hollins received a three-year contract extension today. The front office now needs to build on the momentum of this season and sign key free agents that can get the Grizzlies back in the playoffs.

Great news for Cozy Corner fans. Cozy is now open from 11 til 9pm. Four more hours a day to grab some of the best bbq in town.
April 16th is Foursquare Day, because it is the 4th month, and the 4-squared day. Get it? There are 150+ cities participating in the event which includes parties, business specials, etc. One city that is offering no participation is Memphis. Downtown would be a perfect spot to unlock the coveted Super Swarm Badge. Oh well, maybe next year.

Coco To TBS, Beautiful Weather = Good Times, Spring Football, Tiger Athlete Arrested
Not really Memphis related, but Conan O'Brien has inked a deal with TBS. His new show will start in the fall airing Monday through Thursday at 10pm central time. Great news for Conan fans.
Overton Square's Crawfish Fest had to have one of its largest crowds ever last weekend. The weather was near perfect. Weather experts are saying that this streak of nice weather should continue for the next few days. This is great news for outdoor events including the first Peabody Rooftop Party of the year on Thursday night, the Redbirds home opener on Friday, Hot Wing Fest on Saturday and the Rajun Cajun Crawfish fest on Sunday.
The 2010 Blue-Gray Game is set for Saturday at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. New head coach Larry Porter is generating some excitement for the Memphis football program. The scrimmage is slated to begin at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
Local media hasn't picked up on this just yet, but University of Memphis pitcher Dane Sharp was arrested late Sunday/early Monday on DUI charges. No word just yet if Sharp has been disciplined by Tigers officials. If this was a basketball or football player this would be the lead story for most media outlets.

Crawfish, Redbirds, Tigers Ranked, Tiger
The 15th Annual Overton Square Crawfish Festival is Saturday afternoon. Crawfish, live music and near perfect weather seem like the right ingredients for a great time. All the fun starts at noon.
With Major League Baseball opening their season this week, fans are getting ready for days and nights at Autozone Park. Memphis Redbirds fans will have to wait a few days to get their baseball fix. The Redbirds start their season in Omaha. The home opener will be April 16.
It may be a bit early, but the so-called college basketball experts have released a Preseason Top 25 for the 2010-11 season. The Memphis Tigers come in at number nine.
Here is Nike's latest tv spot featuring Tiger Woods. Didn't really think Nike would try to capitalize on the Tiger's escapades, but the issue apparently has to be faced before the usual Tiger spots return to the airwaves. Mr. Woods tees off today at 12:30 in the Master's.

Liberty Bowl Changes, Big Daddy Kane, Brooks Uncorked
Local college football fans will soon start seeing changes to the caliber of teams appearing in the Liberty Bowl. The recently renewed four year contracts still call for the top team in Conference USA to play in the game. The C-USA opponent will still be a SEC representative, but now it will be the 9th or 10th place team from the conference. Liberty Bowl officials are also looking for ways to incorporate the Big East back into the mix. There have been talks of using a Big East school if the SEC doesn't have a enough qualified teams or as an occasional replacement for C-USA.
Looking to kick it old school this weekend? Big Daddy Kane is playing at Minglewood Hall tomorrow night. Didn't realize this guy was still around. If only Slick Rick was joining him on stage. Bad Times At The Zoo, Robert Plant
According to local news outlets, "Good Times With Weapons" was apparently the theme of the day at Memphis Zoo. A record crowd on the Zoo's Free Tuesday promotion resulted in local youngsters brawling and pulling guns on each other in Overton Park and the surrounding neighborhoods. The high attendance numbers are due to local schools being off for Easter/Spring break. Way to be classy Memphis and Shelby County students.
Side note for the Memphis Zoo staff. Added security for today may have been a little bit helpful. Past attendance records would probably show near record attendance on the Tuesday prior to Easter. This is traditionally a day when schools are off and kids and thugs are looking for something to do. Chalk it up as a learning lesson, but eliminating Free Tuesdays for everyone else because of thuggish behavior is the not the right thing to do. Instead, mandate that anyone under 18 entering the zoo (unless on a school trip) needs to accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Wonder if the fight looked anything like this.
Former Led Zeppelin lead singer Robert Plant is coming to Memphis on Tuesday, July 13 for a one night show at the Orpheum Theatre. Not sure if he is promoting a new album, but he definitely has strong group of material to work with. Here's a little Robert Plant for your listening pleasure.

The University of Memphis women's basketball team lost the championship game of the WBI tournament to Appalachian State on Sunday in Boone, North Carolina. Great season for the Lady Tigers on the roundball court.
Al Green has been confirmed for this year's Live At The Garden concert series. Green will play on Friday, July 23. He usually puts on a great show and would expect nothing less from him this summer.

Women's NCAA Update, Trolley Night, Pot Hole Of The Day
With their win last night, San Diego State will be the fourth team in the Memphis Regional Final of the women's NCAA tournament this week. Games are scheduled for Saturday and Monday.Tennessee will face Baylor at 11am and the Duke vs San Diego State contested is scheduled for 1:30pm. The championship game will be Monday at 6:30pm. Tickets for all three games are $53.
South Main's Trolley Night for the month of March is Friday evening. This will be the first sort of nice weather trolley night of the year. In addition to the usual fun, six artists will be showing at 409 S.Main (old Jay Etkin space). Stop by for some good wine and new works by Ashley Leem, Emma Self, Chris Reed, Regis Lawson, Joel Halpern and Stephen Almond.
Check out this new pot hole (really a sink hole) on I-240 near Walnut Grove. This two feet wide and six feet deep gem will definitely cause rush hour delays. Be careful if you are headed in that direction.

Women's NCAA Update
Three women's basketball teams have punched their tickets to the Memphis Regional Final at FedEx Forum this weekend. Tennessee will face Baylor and Duke will face the winner of tomorrow night's San Diego State-West Virginia game. It should be safe to say that the there will be plenty of orange in the stands.

Tiger Basketball, Little Feat At MIF
The NCAA denied the University of Memphis appeal to reverse penalties stemming from violations that occurred during the 2007-8 basketball season. Now the Tigers must vacate all 38 wins from that season, return NCAA tournament revenues, return its Final Four trophy and take down the banners from that season. Now that this process is over, how much longer will R.C. Johnson be in the athletic department?

There are billboards around town promoting Star Wars: In Concert at FedEx Forum on May 18. The event has tremendous potential for people watching. Claim a patio seat early at Alfred's or Sole to catch a glimpse of true Star Wars fans like these.
And let's not forget the pets.
After the opening round of the Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament, we are getting a clearer picture of the teams that will be in Memphis next weekend for the Sweet 16/South region final. The winners of tomorrow night's Tennesse vs Dayton, Georgetown vs Baylor and LSU vs Duke games will play on Saturday in the round of 16. The other team that will be at FedEx Forum will be Texas, San Diego State, West Virginia or Lamar.
Josh Pastner's first season as head coach at Memphis ended on Friday with the Tigers losing at Ole Miss in the second round of the N.I.T. The Tigers are only losing a couple of seniors and have one of the top recruiting classes in the nation arriving on campus in the fall. Memphis should be the team to beat in Conference USA next season.
The Grizzlies are still in a fight to claim the last playoff spot in the NBA's Western Conference. Through yesterday's games, the Grizzlies are five games behind eighth place Portland and are in a dogfight with Houston to catch the Trailblazers. With only 12 games left, time isn't on the Grizzlies side.

Ike's Closing, Women's Basketball
Memphis-area Ike's and Super D drug stores will be closing effective March 23. Never stopped there for prescriptions, but was always impressed with Ike's beer selection at the Park and Union locations. The Park and Union locations may stay open longer if they are sold to Walgreen's.
No one is really talking about it, but Memphis will host the South region finals of the women's NCAA tournament next weekend at FedEx Forum. Teams that could potentially be in Bluff City include Duke, LSU, Texas and Tennessee. Women's basketball may not have the same appeal as the men's game, but locals need to fill the seats to show that Memphis can support larger sporting events of all kinds.

Big Star Update, Tigers/Rebels, Brackets
Big Star lead singer Alex Chilton died of an apparent heart attack yesterday in New Orleans. In addition to Big Star, Chilton was also an integral part of The Box Tops. No announcement has been made regarding Big Star's May 15 show at the Levitt Shell.
With the Tigers last second win over St. John's, Memphis will now travel to Oxford to play Ole Miss in the second round of the N.I.T tomorrow at 5:30pm. The game will be televised by ESPN2. Its hard to believe the last time the schools played each other in basketball was December of 2006. It seems like a natural rivalry in all sports that should be played every year. Maybe now that Cal is gone, the rivalry will be renewed.
With upsets like Murray State over Vanderbilt (Poor Vandy) and Ohio over Georgetown, everyone's brackets must be hurting right now. And it's only the first day of the NCAA tournament! Tennessee is up next against San Diego State. Go Aztecs!!!

With the Tigers last second win over St. John's, Memphis will now travel to Oxford to play Ole Miss in the second round of the N.I.T tomorrow at 5:30pm. The game will be televised by ESPN2. Its hard to believe the last time the schools played each other in basketball was December of 2006. It seems like a natural rivalry in all sports that should be played every year. Maybe now that Cal is gone, the rivalry will be renewed.
With upsets like Murray State over Vanderbilt (Poor Vandy) and Ohio over Georgetown, everyone's brackets must be hurting right now. And it's only the first day of the NCAA tournament! Tennessee is up next against San Diego State. Go Aztecs!!!

Basketball, St. Pat's, Random Protest Pic, Diana Ross
As expected the Memphis Tigers will be playing in the NIT after losing in the Conference USA Tournament. The Tigers will host St. John's on Wednesday night at FedEx Forum at 8pm. If they Tigers win, the second round game could be against Ole Miss (assuming the Rebels can get by Troy).
The Memphis women's basketball team will also be in post season play in the Women's Basketball Invitational. The Tigers will host Missouri-Kansas City on Thursday night at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse at 7pm.

Tigers Choke
It looks the Tigers lost to Houston 66-65 in the quarterfinals of the C-USA tournament. The loss pretty much knocks the Tigers out of the Big Dance. Look for Memphis to get a NIT bid on Sunday.

Post Season Basketball, Mega Happy Hour
March Madness is upon us and office workers around the country are ready to start filling out their brackets. ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi has both UTEP and Memphis in the big dance in his latest bracket predictions. Lundardi thinks the Tigers will be a 12 seed playing their first and second round games in Spokane, Washington.It would be nice for the Tigers to get sent to a closer site like New Orleans, but just getting into the tournament is a big win for Memphis this season.
The Grizzlies kept their playoff hopes alive after edging out a win over the worst team in the NBA last night. Now 33-31, they are currently on the outside looking in with the 9th best record in the NBA's Western Conference and are 4.5 games behind 8th seeded Portland. The Grizzlies have a tough game tomorrow night at Boston before returning home for Friday night's game against the New York Knicks. You can get special ticket prices for Friday night at Ticketmaster by using the promo code SMSTEAL.

Lots of Music
The official Beale Street Music Festival lineup was announced today. There are several great acts that will be playing at the fest including Jeff Beck, Band of Horses, Widespread Panic and Allison Krauss. Should be a fun weekend. Early odds is that there will a ton of rain leading into the event.
Live at the Garden hasn't officially announced their summer lineup, but we can confirm that Pat Benatar and REO Speedwagon will be part of the series on July 9. More info coming soon.
The Levitt Shell free concert series is just around the corner as well. Confirmed, but not announced, acts include the Soul Rebels Brass Band, The Iguanas and Big Star.

Local Baseball, Music Fest, More Beer
Major League Baseball season kicked off yesterday in Florida with Grapefruit League spring training games. If you are looking for a quick, low-cost baseball fix and can't wait for the Redbirds, you should check out the local college baseball programs. Christian Brothers and Rhodes usually have competitive teams and Memphis has a new stadium. Admission to many of the games is just a few bucks. With bright skies and warmer temperatures, this weekend might be the perfect opportunity to check them out. For those who want to wait for the Redbirds, their home opener in Friday, April 16.

Iris Featured on Food Network, Beer, St. Pat's, Calipari Whiskey?
Restaurant Iris will be featured on Food Network's "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" this Friday night at 9pm. Lots of great choices at Iris, but the best bet is that the show will feature the restaurant's Surf and Turf.
Just a quick reminder that the Memphis River City Brewers Festival will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010 with two available tasting sessions at 12pm and 6 pm in downtown Memphis to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. There will be over 70 beers available and live music during each tasting at Handy Park on Beale Street. Tickets are $30 and admission includes beer samples and a souvenir mug.
A good way to follow up the first session or pre-game for the second session will be Downtown's St. Patrick's Day parade. The parade rolls at 4pm on March 13.

Wharton's Response To Forbes
As many of you know, Memphis was included in the Most Miserable Cities list by Forbes Magazine. Memphis was ranked number three this year, an improvement from number two last year. Unlike the previous administration, new Memphis Mayor A C Wharton didn't take this lightly. Today, he sent an open letter to Forbes editor-in-chief Steve Forbes. Great job by Wharton to stand up and defend the Bluff City.

Last Tuesday, I had the privilege of welcoming home a team of physicians, surgeons, and specialists from Memphis' Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center who traveled to Haiti to attend to the youngest victims of the devastating earthquake. These are exceptionally brilliant and compassionate lifesavers and caregivers, some of the finest in the world. They selflessly gave up weeks of their own lives, careers, and time with their families to minister to the needs of impoverished strangers on the other side of the planet.
When I stepped out of Le Bonheur, I looked up at their new hospital, currently under construction and slated to open this summer. This $340-million, 610,000-square-foot facility will double their current space for care, research, and teaching. Across the street, FedEx is sponsoring the constructing of a home to provide housing for families of long-term patients.
FedEx House will sit at the corner of a larger mixed-income, mixed-housing development called Legends Park. It's one of several Hope VI developments that have flourished in Memphis over the past couple of decades. This past summer, HUD Deputy Secretary Ronald Sims called Memphis "one of the bright shining examples in the United States today," of inner-city revitalization and blight removal.
Down the street from Le Bonheur and Legends Park I could see St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, which provides lifesaving care to children from around the world, regardless of their ability to pay. Around the corner, the new UT Baptist Research Park is under construction, which will make Memphis a global leader in bioscience. Methodist University Hospital, where Apple CEO Steve Jobs came to get a new liver last summer, is a short distance away.
The following night, the Memphis Grizzlies defeated Toronto in a thrilling overtime battle. The Grizz are doing better now than they have in years, and might even secure a post-season berth. Two nights later at FedEx Forum, near historic Beale Street, our beloved University of Memphis Tigers utterly dominated the visiting Southern Methodist University Mustangs. The coach of the Tigers is a young man named Josh Pastner, who may be the least miserable person alive.
This past Saturday, I saw a ballet at the Jeniam Center, our new, $15 million performing arts complex in the heart of our midtown arts district. This facility, modeled after Chicago's famed Steppenwolf Theatre, was financed completely by private gifts and contributions.
In a few weeks, we're going to break ground on the Salvation Army Kroc Center, a 100,000 square foot worship, arts, education, and recreation center a few blocks away. We're one of only 25 cities in the United States that will build a Kroc Center, which required our community to raise $25 million in private funds. Memphis is routinely cited as one of the most charitable cities in the United States.
My point is not about a hospital or a housing complex. It's not about a basketball team or a ballet. It's about our people. As their mayor, I simply cannot allow to pass without comment some of the things you have published about our city.
Your magazine mentioned "unemployment, taxes (both sales and income), commute times, violent crime and how its pro sports teams have fared... weather and Superfund pollution sites... [and] corruption based on convictions of public officials," as the factors for inclusion on your recent list of America's most miserable cities.
By your own criteria, there are far more cities on your list that have far higher unemployment and far longer commute times than Memphis. Most of them lack professional sports altogether. Violent crime in Memphis is declining steadily. There is a new era of transparency and ethical behavior in City Hall, due to a couple of executive orders that I drafted and signed when I took office last October. The sun shines here 230 days a year.
Memphis is not a miserable city, not by any definition, not by any metric.
Memphis is a city of joy. You can hear it coming up from our high school gymnasiums and football fields every Friday evening. You can hear it rocking on Beale Street late every Saturday night. You can hear it in our churches every Sunday morning.
Memphis is a city of innovation. The accomplishments of our past are outshone only by the brilliance of what's happening right now in our arts and business sectors. I'm sure at some point in your life you've enjoyed the music of Otis Redding or Al Green or B.B. King or Johnny Cash. Those artists and countless other achieved lasting, worldwide fame after getting started in Memphis. Brands like FedEx and AutoZone were born here and keep their world headquarters here; companies like International Paper and ServiceMaster have both relocated here in the past five years.
Memphis is a city of resilience. Floods, fire, pestilence, and poverty may have tested us, but they have never broken us. We are a city built on a bluff, positioned to withstand storms that other cities cannot. If the rates of unemployment, high school drop outs, and crime are to be our new battlegrounds, then we will join those fights, and we will prevail. For all of the problems you might show me, I can point to a legion of government agencies, non-profit organizations, churches, volunteer groups, and grassroots activists working together as one Memphis to find the solutions.
Maybe it's something in our water. Maybe it's something in our soil. I think it's something in our souls that makes us Memphians. We know who we are - and miserable is not part of the definition.
We know too that our city's song is not complete. It is being written every day, and it is sung by a chorus of hopeful, energetic voices that will resonate for generations.
Memphis is actually not my hometown. I was born and raised in a small town, about 240 miles east of Memphis. My wife and I made a deliberate choice to put our roots down here, make our careers here, and raise our children here about 40 years ago. New McGuiness, Van Pelt, Stern Beauty Pageant.
Dan McGuiness has opened a new location in Southaven. Not sure how big of a space they have, but it would be nice to see Aqua Net playing there.
ESPN's Scott Van Pelt was recently a victim of Captain Jenks on a live broadcast of SportsCenter. Jenks, who is a somewhat a regular on Howard Stern's satellite radio program, convinced ESPN screeners/producers that he was NFL running back Brian Westbrook. Van Pelt's reaction was priceless.
This is still the best Van Pelt clip of all-time.
Speaking of Stern, soon after the Tiger Woods downfall story broke, Stern announced that he wanted to have a beauty pageant featuring Tiger's mistresses. On March 10, Stern will air the Tiger Woods Mistress Beauty Pageant available only on Sirius/XM. Four of the 13 known Woods mistresses will compete in several categories for a $100,000 prize. There is no doubt that this will be one of the most listened to satellite radio programs ever produced. Another great move by Stern to sell more subscriptions.

Crawfish Festivals, Grizzlies Roster Moves
Two of the more popular spring festivals in Memphis are just around the corner and they both involve mudbugs. The 15th Annual Overton Square Crawfish Festival will on Saturday, April 10 at Bayou Bar & Grill on Madison. The Overton festival is a great tune up for Downtown's Rajun Cajun Crawfish Festival the following weekend on Sunday, April 18. Both events have sub par crawfish (have to be honest), but they are made better by live music, beer, great weather and large crowds.
The Memphis Grizzlies are sending Lester Hudson and Hasheem Thabeet the the NBA Development League effective immediately. Hudson, a Memphis native, was recently acquired as a free agent after being released by the Boston Celtics. Thabeet , the second overall pick in the NBA draft by Grizzlies, had recently been demoted to third string. Is it too soon to call Thabeet a bust?

Mascot Change In Oxford?, New Cooper Young Eateries, Tigers In Trouble
Students at Ole Miss voted to start searching for a new mascot to replace Colonel Reb. Even though the mascot was retired a couple of years ago, the overall thought is that Colonel Reb brings back thoughts of the Old South, slavery, etc. Does anyone really think that a simple mascot change will make these thoughts go away? No. Once a new creepy costumed figure is roaming the sidelines, a new focus will be given to the other parts of the university are deemed offensive.
Those looking to erase history will aim there sites at the use of Rebels and Ole Miss. Rebels, the common nickname for Confederate soldiers, will be an easy one to eliminate. With the new mascot, why keep the Rebel name? And you have to drop "Ole Miss" to prevent people from thinking of the old days in Mississippi. What's next? Dropping Mississippi?
Keeping on the mascot change in O'town, TMZ has some inside scoop on a potential mascot candidate. At least Ackbar shares a resemblance to one of Mississippi's favorite foods...catfish.
And let's not forget the original Colonel Reb replacements proposed just a few years back. Would love to meet the marketing geniuses that came up with juiced up Bruiser and skin head Rowdy.

Grizzlies Trade For Brewer - Lose Him For 3 Weeks, Gay Considering Nets?, Hockey
The Memphis Grizzlies pulled the trigger just before the trade deadline and acquired guard Ronnie Brewer from the Utah Jazz for protected 2011 first-round draft pick. And now the evil twist, Brewer tore his hamstring in his first game with the Grizzlies. He will be sidelined for at least three weeks.
In an interview with the Bergen Record, Rudy Gay let it be known that the Nets horrible 5-51 record is not important when considering big free agent contracts. "The record doesn't mean much when you're dealing with a team," Gay said. "You're thinking about yourself and how you can contribute, and that's what other teams think." Most players want to compete for a championship, Gay just wants the cash. Luckily for Gay, the Nets have a large bank roll for free agents next season.

Memphis At Mardi Gras, Side Street Fire, More Awards For Iris, Trade Deadline
Memphis high school bands represented the city well during several Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans. Kirby was hands down the best representative from the Bluff City. Others included East, Hillcrest and Fairley.
Midtown's Side Street Grill was destroyed by fire over the weekend. There is good news. Owners intend to rebuild and will remain open in the Magnolia Room next door to Side Street.
Restaurant Iris continues to be recognized by restaurant insiders. Chef Kelly English has been named semi-finalist for the 2010 James Beard Foundation Awards. The foundation's Restaurant and Chef Committee selected the nominees from 21,000 online entries.

Blue Fish Closed, Iris
Cooper-Young's Blue Fish has officially closed its doors. In its place will be The Reef. Spokespeople from The Reef are touting a similar menu with lower prices. At least the food be cheaper, the food was never good. People will pay for good food. Restaurants close when the product is bad. Lowering prices may not be the answer.
Speaking of great food that people will pay for, Restaurant Iris is still the best food in Memphis. If you get a chance to go, be sure to try the Oysters Three Ways, Lobster Knuckle Sandwich, Surf and Turf or the trout. The wine list is also one of the best in Memphis.

Basketball, No More Ice, Soup Sunday
The Los Angeles Lakers visit FedEx Forum tonight to face the Grizzlies. The big story tonight is that Kobe Byrant can become the Lakers all-time leading score with 29 points. Will he get it tonight or save a few for the Lakers next home game?
The Grizzlies may have received a little help in the playoff race today. New Orleans Hornets all-star, all-everything guard Chris Paul is out indefinitely with a knee injury. There is no doubt that the Hornets will struggle without Paul.
After losing to UTEP, Memphis Tigers fans knew that additional conference losses were possible this season. Many expected to drop a game to UAB or Marshall, but SMU? Saturday's loss to the Mustangs was definitely a tough blow. Perhaps a blow strong enough to motivate the Tigers to run through UAB this week. Situations like this will prove how good of a coach Josh Pastner really is. Sure he can recruit, but can he rally the troops after a shocking loss? Or better yet, can he win a big game?
Is anyone else ready for the ice to go away? After a weekend of slips and falls on the ice, many Memphians are looking forward to bright skies and warmer temperatures with no ice on the ground. Sorry kids, no more four day weekends.

Kooky Parties
Kooky Canuck has a couple of parties coming up over the next couple of weeks. The first is this Saturday night. The Stetsons and Stars Kick Off Party benefiting The Alzheimer's Association kicks off at 8pm and will feature $1.06 Bud Light draft beer until 2am. There will also be a entertainment provided by country music artists The Mulch Brothers. All of this for NO cover.

Snow Day On Friday?, Grizz/Pistons, TV Tonight
For those of you that like three-day weekends, you might be in luck this weekend. Unfortunately, it may not be a snow-filled day. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather watch beginning Thursday night and ending on Friday. If the weather gals and guys are right, we may have freezing rain, mixed with some snow and high winds. Stock up on your supplies now. If off, where will everyone be hanging out?
Call it bad economic times or an unwillingness for fans to follow a bad team, but it is amazing to see the amount of empty seats at the Palace at Auburn Hills for tonight's Grizzlies/Pistons game. Just a few years ago, Pistons tickets were extremely difficult to get. These days, you can't give them away.
Lots of TV options tonight. The Grizzlies game is on FoxSports Tennessee. The Tigers play at Marshall on CBS College Sports. And the State of the Union address will be on several stations this evening.

Swanky's Moving Forward, Pier Closed
Swanky's Taco Shop on Poplar near Colonial is moving forward with construction. It was initially believed that Swanky's would open in this location in the fall. Today, crews were working on what appears to a patio addition to the space former occupied by Atlanta Bread Company.
The Pier has closed its Downtown location. To be honest, who knew that this place was still open. The only time you ever see people at the Pier is during Downtown's crawfish festival. The space needs some serious updates before a new tenant considers moving in. Should be interesting to see if anyone is will to take a risk and open a new restaurant or club in this space.

Grizzlies Streak Continues, Saints
If you have heard about streaker rumors near 191 Beale Street, you can rest assured that it's not Silky O'Sullivan (no offense) running naked down the street. Instead of a streaker, you will find a record setting winning streak. Tonight, the Grizzlies extended their franchise record home winning streak to 11 games with a win over the Orlando Magic. With the win, the Grizzlies are now 24-19.
The Grizzlies are executing the best marketing tactic around - winning. Winning will generate buzz, fill seats and sell merchandise. A win-win for all involved. Tigers Streak Snapped, Local Gastropub, Bad Politics, Saints Fans
The Memphis Tigers ended their 64 game Conference USA winning streak with a loss to visiting UTEP tonight at FedEx Forum. All good things must come to an end and some fans took it pretty hard. Some were vocally upset and others were in tears. Memphis fans need to realize that winning the conference this year and in the near future will not be the cake walk that the Tigers have been used to in the past. Teams like UTEP, Tulsa and UAB are on par with the Tigers and fans can expect to see at least one or two more conference losses this season. Even with the 3 or so conference losses, Memphis will be a bubble team for NCAA tournament play and they will most likely need to win the Conference USA tournament to get in the big dance.
There is a lot of positive feedback floating around town about Downtown's Local Gastropub. This might be a good spot to check out this weekend.
President Obama commented today that "we lost touch with the American people last year" and followed up the comment with a recommendation for the U.S. government to take a $1.9 trillion loan to pay bills. This would put the U.S.national debt at $14.3 trillion. With a request like that, it looks like he and his Democrat friends are still out of touch. If this keeps up, Democrats are going to get slaughtered in November.

Dish Closing
Cooper-Young restaurant and bar Dish will be closing at the end of the month. On recent visits to the Cooper-Young area Dish looked like business was extremely slow, so this news wasn't a surprise. The biggest news out of Dish in recent months was the now infamous nose biting incident. No word on what may move into the space.
More Students Heading Downtown?
First medical students, then law students and now future artists may be getting their higher education in Downtown Memphis. Pending grant approval, Memphis College of Art is expected to move its master's degree program to a new location on South Main. Not sure if the students will enjoy getting out of Midtown, but this a great way for the college to increase its reach in Memphis.

Grizzlies On A Roll, Memphis Law
The Memphis Grizzlies won again this evening beating the Phoenix Suns in the annual Martin Luther King game. The Grizzlies are now 22-18 and have won four in a row. With Phoenix, Utah, Oklahoma City, Houston and New Orleans having similar records, there could be a log jam of teams trying to get the last seed for the playoffs when the season ends. The easiest way to get into the playoffs? Just win.
One of the many benefits of the University of Memphis law school relocating to Downtown Memphis will be the influx of new people in the Downtown core. The impact is already being seen by restaurant and bar owners. Downtown condos and apartments should also benefit from the fresh faces.

Dooley To Knoxville, New Restaurant Update, Grove Game Dinner
Derek Dooley has been announced as the new head football coach at Tennessee-Knoxville. Dooley is a solid coach with a coaching pedigree (son of long-time Georgia coach Vince Dooley) and coaching experience at Georgia, SMU, LSU, Miami (NFL) and Louisiana Tech . Many Volunteers fans aren't fans of the hire, but Dooley will prove them wrong over the next several years. His first task will be to assemble a quality staff and to put together a top-notch recruiting class.
Dooley was also the athletic director at Louisiana Tech, so he might be the perfect candidate when Mike Hamilton gets fired over the Kiffin fiasco.
Side note - Bruce Pearl can keep the official title of "mad man" on campus.
The new restaurant mentioned in the previous post will be called Aldo's Pizza Pies. Aldo also owns Bardog.

The Grove Grill is holding a Game Wine Dinner on Wednesday, January 20 at 6:30pm. The menu will feature fresh game from Tennessee and Texas. All four courses and wine is $55 plus tax and tip. Here's the menu:

A new restaurant will be opening soon in Midtown. Fuel will open there doors soon in the space that has previously been home to Petra and Hattley's Garage. After sampling the menu last night, this place could easily become a Midtown favorite. The menu will feature a variety of salads, sandwiches and entrees. Vegetarian options will be available as well.
For football fans, one of the best weekends of the year has arrived. Four NFL divisional playoffs games are on the slate this weekend. Alex's Tavern and Calhoun's are two of the best spots in the city to watch games. But Sunday you will have add Kooky Canuck to the list as they host MLK Madness with 99 cent Bud Light draught all day.

Kiffin Leaving K'town
There are rumors flying around the sports world that Lane Kiffin will be leaving his post in Knoxville and returning to Los Angeles to be the head coach at USC. Apparently the Tennessee-Knoxville job isn't the best gig in college football.
Kiffin's departure is a shame. No more weekly reports on his mishaps, player scandals or verbal wars with other coaches. Maybe he is leaving because Urban Meyer is sitting out for a while. No one to fight with, so off to the west coast he goes. There he can resume his antics by picking fights with UCLA and Notre Dame and by committing recruiting/improper benefits violations that the NCAA already is investigating at USC.
Thank goodness we still have Bruce Pearl to entertain us.

Cold Continues, Artie, Roll....
We finally got our first snow of the season. Only an inch, but enough to have a scaled back winter wonderland. Single digit wind chills are going to be fun tonight.
Sad news in the New York Post today. Actor, comedian and Howard Stern co-hort Artie Lange allegedly tried to commit suicide over the weekend. The Post is reporting that Lange stabbed himself nine times. A few words of advice for Lange...COME ON ARTIE, DON'T BE THAT GUY!
The BCS Championship game is tonight on Fox. Alabama vs Texas. Saban vs Brown. Hook'em Horns! Dan McGuiness is sounding like the perfect place to watch the game.

Umm...Its Cold, Fist Pumping In Memphis
If you haven't stepped outside in the past couple of days, its pretty damn cold outside. And guess what, its going to get colder. Single digit lows are in the forecast for later in the week and there's a good chance we won't be above freezing until Sunday. Wait! There's more! There's a very good chance of snow on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Who's ready for a snow day?
Something that may warm up the streets of Memphis is the upcoming Jersey Shore Pub Crawl 2K10 on Saturday, January 30. The pub crawl will be held on Beale Street with stops at Wet Willie's, Silky O'Sullivan's, Club 152 and Republic.
Here's a quick check list for those who are participating:
1. Spray tan
2. Blow out hair
3. Fist pumping
4. A love for Jaeger
5. A douche-bag attitude
6. Affliction or Ed Hardy shirts (The brand will dictate how much of a douche you really are)
Basically, you will need to be a douche and look like the lead singer of Color Me Badd, 90's Vanilla Ice or these guys.

Hola 2010, Liberty Bowl, More Trouble In K-town
2009 quickly went by and here we are in 2010. Downtown seemed like the place to be last night with great parties at Silly Goose, Bardog and Paula & Raiford's. Here's to everyone fulfilling their resolutions.
Cars with Arkansas and East Carolina flags are starting to appear city-wide and more fans are expected to arrive tomorrow for the Liberty Bowl. If you are going to the game, you might want to bundle up. The temperature at kickoff is expected to be 32 degrees with a windchill of 26. There's also a chance for snow tomorrow night, but that shouldn't be until later in the evening. East Carolina has a tough defense and should put up a good fight, but Arkansas should be able to handle the Pirates. Razorbacks win by 17.
Speaking of fights, apparently there was a brawl at the Liberty Bowl luncheon on Thursday at the Hilton Hotel. Two East Carolina players got into a fight over a dessert. Headlocks over a piece of pie? These guys may have been trying to impress Jerry Lawler and earn spots on Memphis wrestling. It also beckons the question "what would you to for a Klondike Bar?" To our friends at Unilever, royalty checks would be appreciated.
Run ins with the law are starting to become a trend again in Knoxville. Four players were arrested today and charged with various crimes including gun and drug possession. Isn't there a better way to celebrate a win over an in-state rival and New Year's in Knoxville? Bruce Pearl, who couldn't be reached for comment, is probably painting himself orange to intimidate the district attorney into dropping the charges. Look at the bright side Vols fans, at least Lane Kiffin wasn't involved.

Jarrett's To Close, Rough Housing At Dish, Kooky Specials
East Memphis restaurant Jarrett's in closing on after dinner service on New Year's Eve. With an "odd" location in a strip mall on Qunice, Jarrett's was a hidden gem in the Memphis restaurant world.
Looks like there is a new reason to avoid Cooper-Young's Dish. It seems like Dish patrons like to get a little physical. Just enough to lose part of your nose. This incident bring back great memories of Chris Farley in the under appreciated film Dirty Work.
After a great Christmas bash last Thursday, Kooky Canuck is still in the holiday spirit. They are offering 34oz Bud Lights all day on Wednesday for only $2.

Mirimichi Closing?, New Chef At River Oaks, Rehab Disco
Officials at Mirimichi golf course in Millington have announced they are temporarily closing the golf course just months after opening this summer. The course appeared to be in great shape, but JT wants to make more improvements to get the course ready for future tournament play. The course is expected to reopen in July of 2010. Spring would be better for the average golfer (better weather), but who's complaining?
Jose Gutierrez has taken over chef duties at River Oaks in East Memphis. Many people know Gutierrez from his time as owner/chef at Encore and chef at Chez Philippe. River Oaks has been favorite for East Memphians for several years now. It will be interesting to see how Gutierrez incorporates his style into the menu. For those who still want the old school River Oaks feel, check out Circa by John Bragg and Grace.
If your schedule isn't overloaded with Christmas parties this weekend, you might want to tryout Downtown Memphis' newest club. Rehab Disco's "soft opening" is Friday night at 8:30. Rehab is located in the space formerly occupied by Orleans on Front (94 Front). They have done a ton of work to the place and it looks really nice on the inside and you can't miss their huge sign outside.

Memphis To MVC?
During tonight's South Alabama basketball radio broadcast, former South Alabama Athletic Director Joe Gottfried mentioned that Jaguars would like to join Conference USA after the next big conference shift led by the Big East. He mentioned that Memphis is pushing to move the Tiger football squad to the Big East and then move all other Tiger sports (including basketball) to the Missouri Valley Conference. According to Gottfried, the Big East will add a 9th school in the next two years.
All of the talk in Memphis has been an all-sports move to the Big East, not to be a football-only member. One has to wonder how Memphis fans would feel about this move? Yes, the Tigers would be in an AQ football conference and basketball may be a in a better conference, but basketball would still be in a conference with a "mid-major" image.

Big Wins For Grizzlies, Trouble In K-town?
The Grizzlies have been playing very well of late. After starting the season 1-8, the Grizzlies now stand at 9-12 including back-to-back wins over the Dallas Mavericks and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Surprisingly, the Grizzlies are winning with one of the top front courts in the league. Next up is the Oklahoma City Tunder at FedExForum on Friday night. Plenty of seats are still available.
There are reports coming out of Knoxville that Tennessee-Knoxville is under investigation for possible recruiting violations. Keeping hotties, er hostesses, on the radars of recruits has been a long standing on-campus tradition at many universities. This tradition typically stays on campus and doesn't go as far as 200 miles away as is being reported. Adding this potential violation to the known secondary violations may mean some sort of probation from the NCAA.

No Class At Bama, Slow Night At Channel 5
The University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa announced that all classes have been canceled from January 6-8. The Crimson Tide will be playing in the BCS national championship game on January 7 in Pasadena, California. It's good to see that the Alabama administration made this decision, but Hook'em Horns!
Channel 5 continues to provide weaker news coverage. Tonight's lead story was about the Tiger Woods scandal, including interviews with Lebron James on the issue and John Daly's ex-wife (or soon to be ex) about life as a golfer wife. Surely there was more important local news in Memphis today. Like the second story about weather associated deaths and local flooding. Or the third story about a local woman charged with arson after she allegedly set her former house on fire after being evicted. WMC-TV's gatekeepers need to get their priorities straight and focus on local or important national news and save entertainment news for later in the broadcast.
If WMC's limited pre-game access to Lebron James was used by Janice Broach to ask questions about Woods instead of legitimate basketball/sports questions from Jarvis or Anderson, then someone at Channel 5 needs to find a new job very quickly.
And for the quote that Broach couldn't find from Lebron, here's a little help.

Los Compadres Opens New Doors, Mark Cuban, Charlie Brown
Los Compadres is open in the their new spot on Poplar and Tillman (former location of Costa Vida). The space looks to be a bit bigger than their former location at Poplar and Collins. Speaking of the former location, El Toro Loco will be opening soon.
It would be nice if the Grizzlies had an owner as outgoing as Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. Memphis owner Michael Heisley is rarely seen at games and many fans are under the impression that he doesn't care about the team or the city. Cuban is always visible (sometimes good, sometimes bad) at Mavericks games and is well known for his appreciation of fan support. One year Cuban and the Mavericks gave each ticket holder in the last game of the year free round-trip airline tickets on American Airlines.
Keeping himself and the Mavericks in the eyes of the media, Cuban even hosted WWE's Raw last night. His appearance made headlines in broadcast, electronic and print media across the country today.
It isn't necessary for Heisley to jump in a wrestling ring, but it would be a good thing for him to have more of a presence in Memphis. It would show that he actually cares about the city that invested millions to get the Grizzlies in town. Making better hires and player decisions would be a good thing too.
The holiday classic A Charlie Brown Christmas aired tonight on ABC. One of the best Peanuts feature cartoons, the dancing scene never get old. Everyone should master at least one the moves from the dancers.

Tigers Almost In Top 25, Dirty Frosty, Clapton Coming To Memphis
The Memphis Tigers almost cracked the Top 25 this week, coming in at #26 in the AP Poll and #34 in the Coaches Poll. Coach Pastner has been doing a good job so far. Wins over Tennessee-Knoxville and Syracuse in the upcoming weeks would be huge for this year's squad. The Tigers return to action on Wednesday night against Montana State at FedExForum.

Great Burger, Liberty Bowl
It was a bit chilly in Memphis last night, so watching the Christmas parade while enjoying beverages at South Of Beale was the perfect option. The menu has changed since S.O.B.'s opening and there are several options that sound delicious. For those who enjoy them, the oxtail wontons are still on the menu. They also have a delicious hamburger with gruyere cheese and caramelized onions. The burger is served with fries and a fried pickle. Good stuff. Oh yeah, the parade was a nice, family oriented event.

Rehab Disco
It appears that there is a new club in Downtown Memphis. Rehab Disco is opening at 94 Front Street in the space formerly occupied by Orleans On Front. According to their Facebook page, Rehab's soft opening is set for December 18 and the Grand Opening will be December 26.
Rehab is also having a Sunday Funday party this Sunday at 2:30pm. This is a good opportunity to check out the new space and enjoy $1 domestic beers and free grub.

Big Fun This Weekend
Sure the weather is cold, but here are a few ideas for a good time this weekend in Memphis.
Kickoff your weekend tonight at the Hi-Tone with Amy LaVere.
Starry Nights at Shelby Farms continues through January 2. This is a fun tour with over one million lights.
The Broad Avenue Holiday Art Walk takes places on Friday night from 6-9pm. Check out art galleries including a special exhibit by George Hunt. Stop by The Cove for a beverage to warm up your spirits. While you are in the neighborhood, head over to Caritas Village for the Hope Gallery's Peach Exhibition.
Saturday afternoon will be filled with tons of college football on TV. If you get bored with all the action, the Memphis Holiday parade starts at 5pm on South Main. Speaking of holiday parades, when is the Orange Mound Christmas Parade?
After the parade, grab a cocktail or a snack at S.O.B. before heading to the Memphis Tigers game at FedEx Forum. The Tigers take on Arkansas State at 7pm.

Restaurant Poll, Hogs Are Coming
Now is the time to vote for your favorite restaurants and bars in the Memphis Magazine Readers Restaurant Poll. The poll is open through December 18 and the winners will be announced in the February 2010 issue of Memphis Magazine.
