Porter Named New Tigers Coach. Basketball, George & Reba

The University of Memphis named Larry Porter head coach of the football Tigers. Porter, currently an assistant at LSU, is a former Memphis player and is considered to be one the top recruiters in the country. His one knock is that he has not been a coordinator on either side of the ball, so the jump to head coach might be a big one for Porter. There is no doubt that Porter will surround himself with coaching talent that is expected to take Memphis to the next level.

Earlier in the week, rumors were circulating that Memphis was going to hire Washington Redskins assistant Jerry Gray. Gray's connection to the Tiger program was FexEx founder and CEO Fred Smith. Smith is also a minority owner of the Redskins and he has a son on the Redksins staff. Current Tiger Cannon Smith is also Smith's son. Hiring Gray would have been just like Smith and FedEx's acquisition and operation of Kinko's...a horrible decision.

Sticking with the Tigers, Josh Pastner's team has a two game winning streak after overpowering Tennessee Tech and Central Arkansas this week. The winning streak should reach three games after Memphis takes on Oakland Monday night at FedEx Forum.

Country music fans should enjoy the recently announced George Strait/Reba McEntire concert that is coming to FedEx Forum on March 4, 2010. Tickets are set to go on sale on January 28, 2010.

Grizzlies Continue Streak, Tigers Win, Trouble In Oxford?

How about that? After a 102-97 road win over the Philadelphia 76ers, the Memphis Grizzlies have a three game winning streak. Where is the sudden inspiration coming from? Is the team finally gelling? Could it be the combined 11-27 record of the opponents during the streak? Or maybe because the A.I. experiment distraction/cancer is no longer on their minds? It doesn't really matter. Wins are wins. The Grizzlies bring their winning streak back to Memphis Saturday night when they take on the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Memphis Tigers got back in the win column after beating up Tennessee Tech 92-59 Friday night. It was a nice win after suffering a tough loss against #1 ranked Kansas earlier in the week.

Ole Miss was hoping to be in the eye of the national media for its on the field performance against LSU Saturday afternoon. Instead, negative attention may be the biggest news out of Oxford. After several days of speculation, it has been confirmed that the Ku Klux Klan will hold a rally in Oxford. Representatives have stated they intend to hold a peaceful rally to protest a song recently banned by the University because the song ends with fans yelling "The South Will Rise Again." Ole Miss has indicated they will not have an increased security presence (not really sure if that is a smart idea).

It will be interesting to see how the Rebel coaching staff spins this for recruits. Every other team recruiting against Ole Miss will remind prospects of this incident to try and sway them away from Oxford.

Here's the bottom line. The Ole Miss Rebels play in Oxford tomorrow, the KKK plans to be there and fans may get lucky and see some interesting things. There may be a cake raffle.

Or an under the robe contest.

Guns & Dating, Grizzlies Streak, Weekly Football Picks

Nothing sounds like a perfect date more than firing a gun with your significant other. The Commercial Appeal has an article about this new date option at a Memphis gun range. Here's the big question...if your date has a perfect aim, is she/he a keeper or someone to run away from?

The Memphis Grizzlies are on the first winning streak of the season after winning back-to-back games over the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Los Angeles Clippers. The Grizzlies head to Philadelphia for a road contest tomorrow night against the 76ers before returning home on Saturday night against Brandon Jennings and the Milwaukee Bucks.

R.C. Johnson continues the search for the next University of Memphis football coach. According to reports, Johnson has already interviewed at least three coaches with several more still in the works. Many are expecting Johnson to interview current LSU assistant and former Memphis player Larry Porter this weekend. Porter will be in the Mid-South area this weekend as LSU visits Ole Miss.

What are the chances that Phil Fulmer takes over as the Vandy head coach after his season? Discuss amongst yourselves.

And now for the picks...

Last Week: 4-2
Season: 43-17 (72%)

Houston over Memphis
LSU over Ole Miss
Tennessee-Knoxville over Vanderbilt
Arizona over Oregon
Houston Texans over Tennessee Titans
New Orleans Saints over Tampa Bay Bucaneers

Big Fun This Weekend

Here are a few options for people who want to get out of the house this weekend.

80's hair cover band Aquanet is playing at the Big League in Southaven Friday night.

Memphis Tigers host in-state foe Tennessee Tech at the FedEx Forum Friday at 7pm.

60th Annual Holiday Bazaar at the Memphis College of Art. This is great opportunity to pick up original art work from MCA's finest. Admission is free. Hours are 6-9p on Friday and 10a-3p on Saturday.

The Memphis Grizzlies return to the FedEx Forum Saturday night at against the Milwaukee Bucks. If cheering on the Grizzlies isn't a big enough spark for you, then watching Brandon Jennings in his only visit to Memphis this season should be.

Fans of 80's music will enjoy seeing Calculated Dog and Walrus Saturday night at The Vine in Midtown.

Another Tough Loss To Kansas, A New Club G, Turkey Day Party, Mullet Love

Once again, the Memphis Tigers dropped a close game to the Kansas Jayhawks 57-55. The Tigers played well, but they need to pick it up on offense. Coach Pastner definitely has them going in the right direction. The Tigers return to action Friday night at against Tennessee Tech at the FedEx Forum.

It appears that Judd Grisanti is opening a new restaurant in the same space that used to be home to his father's retaurant, Ronnie Grisanti's. Club G is back!

Something interesting to point out is the fact that Grisanti-affiliated restaurants quickly become cougar dens. Everyone knows about the cougars at Spindini. A new, up and coming cougar haven is Elfo's in Germantown. Keeping with the family tradition, Judd should have no problem attracting cougars to his next spot.

Ernestine and Hazel's is having its 8th Annual Turkey Day Party Thanksgiving night starting at 8pm. There will be two DJs, jello shots and Bobby's world famous punch to go along with the usual selection of beer and Soul Burgers. Some of the proceeds will go to CASA.

Who doesn't like to party with two r's?

Turkey Tip Off, Classic Presser, Ober Dies

For those that want to get their drink on and start Thanksgiving weekend the right way, Kooky Canuck has something you for you. Starting Wednesday, November 25th at 11 am you can get $.99 Bud Light draught beer until Thanksgiving morning at 2:30 am.

After losing a close game to John Calipari's Kentucky Wildcats, Miami of Ohio's coach Charlie Coles had a classic response when a reporter asked "How did this one get away from you?" You have to appreciate his sense of humor.

On a sad note, Ken Ober passed away over the weekend. Ober is best known for hosting MTV's gameshow Remote Control that ran from 1987-90. He was only 52.

In rememberance of Ober, here is the video for "Hook" by Blues Traveler.

So Far So Good For Pastner, Big Test Tomorrow Night

It looks like Josh Pastner and the Memphis Tigers have picked up where the previous staff left off. The Tigers beat Jackson State on Friday night to get their first win of the season and it looks like Pastner has secured one of the top recruiting classes in the country. This class includes four of the top 50 recruits according to Rivals.com.

The Tigers have a big test Tuesday night against the top ranked Kansas Jayhawks. Yes, the same team that broke Memphis fan's and player's hearts in the NCAA championship game two years ago. The game will be broadcast nationally as part of ESPN's 24 hours of basketball Tuesday evening at 9pm.

Good Bye A.I., New Respect For Kiffin, Classy Football Owner

It appears the Memphis Grizzlies and Allen Iverson have agreed to terminate Iverson's contract. Chalk the overall A.I. situation up as another mistake by Grizzlies ownership and management. On a positive note, the Grizzlies did manage to get a win over the Minnesota Timberwolves over the weekend.

Two thumbs up to Tennessee-Knoxville's Lane Kiffin today. Mostly known as a young renegade, trash talker, Kiffin did the right thing today when he dismissed two of three football players for their alleged participation in a robbery attempt last weekend. Many "big time" schools would have suspended the players and/or let the issue fade away. Apparently Kiffin wants to try to run a clean program without off the field distractions.

There is always talk of which schools or professional teams have the best fans. Another new person to add to the "classy" list is Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams. Glad to see he still has some passion for the game.

Quick Hits: Downtown Dining Continues, More Coaching Changes Needed, Football

Downtown Dining Week continues through Saturday at participating restaurants. This appears to have been a successful promotion with busy restaurants and happy diners. Why doesn't the Memphis Restaurant Association have a similar promotion city-wide?

The New Orleans Hornets were not happy with the results of the their team, so they fired head coach Byron Scott. The Grizzlies should take the same step and dismiss Lionel Hollins. With a 1-8 record this season and a 32-80 overall record as head coach of the Grizzlies, Hollins needs to go. Continued losses will lead to even lower attendance and another failed lottery pick. Sounds like the perfect making for a relocation to Seattle.

Football

Things appear to be back to normal in Knoxville. A few wins under their belts and the criminal enterprise back in motion.

R.C. Johnson continues to the Memphis football coach search after firing Tommy West earlier this week. A new name on the list might be Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster who stated “That might be a job I might be interested in. I think there’s a lot of things that are attractive about it.” Other new names appearing on the the rumor mill are Lou Holtz and Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong. Foster would be good. Holtz, not so much. Strong would be...strong.

And now for the picks.

West Out At Memphis, Who's Next?

As expected, Memphis Tigers football coach Tommy West was relieved of his duties after a Monday morning meeting with A.D. R.C. Johnson. In a presser, West let it be known that unless there is a change in the status quo at Memphis, then the program will not improve. Basically, put Memphis coaches and players on the same playing field (technology, equipment and facilities) or drop the program.

If R.C. Johnson doesn't agree with West's comments, then Shirley Raines needs to step up and find an athletic director with the vision to take Memphis to the next level as an athletic department, not just basketball.

Some of the early names rumored to be interested in the Memphis football job are former Ole Miss and Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville, former Auburn and current North Alabama head coach Terry Bowden, former Southern Miss head coach Jeff Bower, current LSU assistant coach and Memphis alum Larry Porter, current Auburn assistant coach Trooper Taylor and current Oklahoma State assistant coach Gunther Brewer.

Iverson Gone?, Vols Taking It To Tigers

Allen Iverson has taken a leave of absence from the Memphis Grizzlies for personal reasons. Many believe this is a result of his lack of playing time off the bench.

The Grizzlies should trade him as quickly as possible. If he remains on the team, his presence will hinder any progress the Grizzlies may make. While they are at it, they should fire Lionel Hollins. Bad hire to begin with and the team isn't producing under his leadership.

You have to feel sorry for the fans that shelled out hard earned money to buy tickets when A.I. signed with Memphis. Management knew good and well that having A.I. on the team would generate ticket sales. If he remains off the team, the Grizzlies should offer refunds or deep discounts to ticket holders. It would be the right thing to do.

The Memphis Tigers are getting thumped by Tennessee 42-7 at halftime. Wow! The Vols have scored on 6 of 7 drives. Most teams get up for in-state rivalry games. Apparently the Tigers just lay down. Any guesses on the new coach?

Quick Hits: Restaurant Week Reminder, Football

Just a reminder that Downtown Dining Week kicks off on Sunday and continues through Saturday, November 14. Its tough to beat 3 courses for only $20.09 (plus beverages tax and tip). This is an incredible opportunity to sample great food and and support locally owned businesses.

Football Picks

This weekend Tommy and the Tigers take a cross-state road trip to Knoxville to take on the Volunteers. A win in K-town could be the only way for Coach West to keep his job. Even with a win, it may be too little too late, but the win would be nice for Memphis fans.

It's Basketball Time!!!

The Grizzlies tipped off their season last week, but for a large majority of basketball fans in Memphis the most important tip off is tonight. First year head coach Josh Pastner and the Memphis Tigers open up their 2009-10 campaign this evening against Lemoyne-Owen in an exhibition match up at FedEx Forum. This will also the first game of the year for Lemoyne-Owen.

Other local colleges will tip of their seasons with exhibition games next week. Christian Brothers will take on Memphis and Rhodes will travel to Tennessee-Martin both on November 9.

As expected, the Grizzlies are already off to a rough 1-3 start and things do not appear to be getting better. Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo recently had a shouting match during a game and today Gay became a restricted free agent after not agreeing to terms with the Grizzlies. Gay reportedly turned down $50 million over five years.

To make things more complicated, the real Allen Iverson has arrived. After playing in just one game, A.I. is already complaining about playing time. “No. I’m not a bench player. I’m not a sixth man,” Iverson said. “Look at my resume and that’ll show I’m not a sixth man." And the cancer begins.
