Quick Hits: Ole Miss, Chili's/St. Jude, Encore No More, Football Picks

It was good to see the overrated program known as Ole Miss put back in its place. As the old saying goes...back to life, back to reality. Three game losing streak anyone?

If you are eating out on Monday (lunch or dinner), why not stop by Chili's? Chili's locations nation-wide will donate 100% of Monday's profits to St. Jude. More info here.

Chef Jose Gutierrez has announced that Downtown's Encore restaurant is closing its doors today (if not last night). The economy and a contracting Downtown market are to blame. Gutierrez has plans to open another restaurant in East Memphis.

With Tommy West uncomfortably resting in the hot seat, can the Memphis Tigers get their first win of the season over a FBS opponent?

Big Fun This Weekend

Here are a few recommendations for people looking to get out of the house this weekend.

Free concerts continue tonight through Sunday at the Levitt Shell.

Memphest kicks off this weekend at the Mid-South Fairgrounds. There will be rides, fair food and music. Some of the bigger acts this weekend include Bret Michaels on Friday night and Cowboy Mouth on Saturday.

The Mid-South Fair begins its first year in Southaven at the Desoto Civic Center on Friday. In addition to rides and rodeo fun, Brooke Hogan will perform on Friday night.

On Saturday, you can get your dose of Scottish heritage on at the Clamjamfry at Evergreen Presbyterian Church. For some reason ice cold beer and sheep herding are a great combo.

Memphis Tigers will host the Thundering Herd of Marshall at the Liberty Bowl at 11am. The game will be televised regionally on CSS, available locally on Comcast channel 6. Check your local listings for availability. Plenty of tickets are still available.

Redbirds Wrap Up Season, Fist Bumping

After going undefeated in post-season play, the Memphis Redbirds lost a heart breaker tonight on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning of the Triple-A Championship Game to the Durham Bulls. Tough way to end the season.

Mayor Pro Tem Myron Lowery continued to make Memphis look bad in national and international eye today when he greeted the Dalai Lama with a fist bump. Thank goodness A.C. Wharton didn't do it. If the Pope or the President comes to town what will Lowery do? A running chest bump?

Redbirds Win PCL, Alley Jams, West Out?

The Memphis Redbirds swept the PCL post-season and the PCL Championship with a win over Sacramento on Friday night. The Redbirds will now face the Durham Bulls in the Triple-A National Championship game tomorrow night in Oklahoma City. The "Bricktown Showdown" will be televised live by ESPN2 at 6pm.

Downtown Alley Jams start this Wednesday with the Neosoulville Alley Party in Gayoso Alley! It will be a fun night of funk and soul featuring live music by The City Champs, Tonya Dyson, Tim Terry, Cassie Bonner, and Candace Ashir. You can't go wrong with live music, without a cover. Beverages start flowing at 4:30pm with music starting at 6pm.

Did Tommy West save his job with a win over Tennesse-Martin? He may be safe or now, according to Rivals.com. A certain new Tiger quarterback's dad may have the cash to change that. Tuberville anyone?

Quick Hits: Redbirds, Cordova Food News, Football

The Memphis Redbirds return to action tonight on the road against Sacramento in the finals of the PCL Championship. The Redbirds lead the best of five series 2-0. The winner will advance to the Triple-A championship in Oklahoma City next Tuesday. Good luck boys!

Two new restaurants are coming soon to Cordova. Midtown favorite Soul Fish will open its second Memphis location in November. They are known for tasty catfish, but its hard to stay way from the Soul Fish Cuban sandwich. Slim Skillets, opening in October, will offer fried chicken and sides served family-style.

The Memphis Tigers return to action in the Liberty Bowl this weekend against Tennessee-Martin. Tommy West knows he is in trouble if the losing continues (especially to a FCS school), so he has made a change at quarterback. Will that be enough to get the Tigers by the Skyhawks?

Big Fun This Weekend

Here are a few recommendations for people looking to get out of the house this weekend.

Free concerts continue tonight through Sunday at the Levitt Shell.

The best bet of the weekend will be Cooper Young Festival on Saturday. Lots of people, art, music and fun.

If you still have energy after Cooper Young Festival, there are a couple of options. Willie Nelson is playing at the Mud Island Amphitheater or you can go to the Liberty Bowl to watch Memphis take on Tennessee-Martin. Tickets are still available for both events.

A great way to wrap up the weekend will be Bardog's Birthday Bash on Sunday. It sounds like this will be an alley party (weather permitting) that will feature drink specials, a dunk tank and a meatball eating contest. Festivities begin at noon.

Midtown Chick-fil-a Opening Tomorrow

Chick-fil-a will finally open in Midtown Memphis tomorrow. The first 100 customers will receive a free Chick-fil-a for a year. Each of the first 100 adults in line will receive 52 free Chick-fil-A meal certificates. Lines can start forming 24 hours before the doors open. The new restaurant is located at 1980 Union Avenue and opens at 6am Thursday.

It may not be fun hanging out in line with the non-stop rainy weather Memphis has been going through. Also can't wait for the long drive-thru lines and more standing traffic on Union.

Redbirds Shut Out Sacramento To Win Game One

Five Memphis Redbirds pitchers combined to shout out the Sacramento River Cats 1-0 in game one of the PCL Finals at Autozone Park. This will also be the final home game of the year for the Redbirds. Plenty of tickets are still available. Games three through five will be played in Sacramento.

Cooper Young Fest This Weekend

One of Memphis' best events returns to Midtown this weekend. Cooper Young Festival kicks off Friday night with a four mile run and is followed up by a full day of art, food and live music on Saturday. Be sure to check out The Iguanas on the main stage at 5:15pm on Saturday.

Middle Tennessee Beats Up Memphis

Memphis blunders once again hurt the Tigers resulting in a 31-14 loss to Middle Tennessee State. Only two games into the season, the Tigers offense has not shown any sign of gelling. The Tigers dropped to 0-2.

A blow out loss to Ole Miss followed up by an embarrassing loss to yet another Sunbelt team has elevated Tommy West's position on the hot seat. If West doesn't step down by the end of the season, both he and athletic director R.C. Johnson should be fired by Shirley Raines.

Hey hey, ho ho, Tommy West has got to go. And take R.C. with you.

Quick Hits: Tigers Lose Garcia, Pick Up Jackson, Football Picks

Memphis Tigers coach Josh Pastner must have been riding an emotional roller coaster on Friday. Early in the day, Pastner announced that 6'11 Angel Garcia will miss his sophomore season with a torn ACL. Garcia's absence leaves the Tigers with just eight scholarship players for the season.

Pastner's frown was turned upside down on Friday evening when local high school standout guard Joe Jackson announced his verbal commitment to the Tigers. Jackson is the 12th best player in the country and the 5th best point guard according the Rivals.com. He will be eligible to play in the 2010-11 season.

Football season continues this week with more college action, week one of the NFL and the Southern Heritage Classic comes to town. If you have a chance, get to the Liberty Bowl and check out the Classic.

Redbirds Sweep, Advance To Championship Series

The Memphis Redbirds swept the PCL American Division playoffs tonight, beating Albuquerque 1-0. With the win, the Redbirds advance to the PCL Championship Series starting Tuesday at Autozone Park. Plenty of great seats are still available.

Redbirds Take Game 2, Free Tickets For Game 3 In Memphis

The Memphis Redbirds used a five run ninth inning to take game two 8-6 over the Albuquerque Isotopes. The Redbirds return to action in Memphis on Friday night for game three of the best of five series.

Free tickets are available for game three, but there is catch. To help celebrate the Grizzlies signing of Allen Iverson, the Redbirds have come up with A.I. Night. Any fans with "A.I." initials will receive a free tickets with proof of identification. Do tattoos count?

Big Fun This Weekend

Here are a few recommendations for people looking to get out of the house this weekend.

Beer lovers will enjoy Young At Art's Art On Tap on Friday night. This is always a strong event with a large selection of beers to choose from. Admission is free for Young At Art members, $40 for Dixon members and $50 for the general public.

Keep the sampling going with Zoo Rendevous at the Memphis Zoo on Saturday night. $200 per person gets you food from over 70 Memphis area restaurants.

Germantown Festival is a good family event featuring arts & crafts, rides and the Running of the Weenies (interesting). The festival kicks off Saturday at 9:30 am. Admission is free.

Free concerts continue at the Levitt Shell, with shows starting tonight and continuing through Sunday night.

The Delta Fair & Music Festival wraps up this weekend. Pig and ostrich races continue along with music from The Bellamy Brothers and Vince Gill on Friday night and Boys Like Girls on Saturday night. Apparently the "must see" of the festival is the Banana Derby. Can't go wrong with monkeys riding dogs.

If festivals, fundraisers, monkey racing or music aren't your thing, there's always football. Jackson State and Tennessee State will face off in the Southern Heritage Classic at the Liberty Bowl on Saturday night. Good football to go along with great bands. Tickets are still available.

Redbirds Win Game 1

The Memphis Redbirds won game one of their best of five series against Albuquerque on Wednesday night. The final score was 6-2. Big props go to Jarrett Hoffpauir (homerun and 3 RBI) and Jaime Garcia (1 hit and 0 ER in 5.1 IP). Game two is Thursday night in New Mexico. The Redbirds return to Memphis on Friday for game three of the playoff series.

Halloween Is Right Around The Corner

It's scary to think that Halloween is right around the corner. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so one could expect a large amount of trick-or-treaters and costume parties around town. Stonewall should be a good time this year. Don't wait until the last minute, get your costume and decorations today.

AI to Grizzlies, Trouble At Backstreet, Liberty Bowl Beer Sales

The Memphis Grizzlies and Allen Iverson have come to terms on a one-year agreement. Iverson is probably the biggest name the Grizzlies have ever signed, but he is on the downside of his career. Via Twitter, Iverson wrote "I feel that they are committed to developing a winner and I know that I can help them to accomplish that. I feel that I can trust them." Let's hope he can be a solid contributor.

Over the weekend, Midtown's Backstreet was raided by police and resulting in temporary closure. Undercover Memphis Police officers say they witnessed illegal drug sales, illegal alcohol sales, and gambling inside the club on at least six occasions. Based on rumors that have been floating around for a few years, this is not surprising.

Does it surprise anyone that beer sales at the Memphis vs Ole Miss game at the Liberty Bowl exceeded expectations? Sales from the game achieved 40% of the budgeted sales for the season. Needless to say, city officials are very happy. Many people have complained about the price being $7. Stop the whining. Its the same price you would pay (if not cheaper) at any professional sporting event in the city.

Redbirds Ready For Postseason Play

The Memphis Redbirds have clinched a playoff birth and kick off a best of five playoff series against the Albuquerque Isotopes tonight in New Mexico. The Redbirds return to Memphis on Friday for game three of the series. Games four and five will be played Saturday and Sunday in Memphis, if necessary. Tickets for Friday's game are still available.

Quick Hits: Fighting Ducks, Free Chicken, Mayor's Race, Football

Agree with University of Oregon 100% for suspending running back LeGarrette Blount for the rest of the season. His reaction to the taunt of a low class Boise player (Byron Hout) was extreme, but taking a swing at teammates and then having to be restrained after attempting to take his bad-self to the stands was egregious. For future incidents, Oregon players only need to remember, what would Daffy, Donald, Howard or the Aflac duck do?

To Byron Hout, act like you've been there before. Hout would most likely have received some type of discipline for his bush league antics, but getting jacked on Sportscenter over and over again for his embarrassing actions is punishment enough.

Who doesn't like free stuff? Chik-fil-a is giving away free chicken sandwiches on Monday to guests wearing college logo t-shirts. Memphis-area locations are already slammed everyday, so get there early. Heck, you might want to tailgate while you are waiting in line.

The special election for the mayor of Memphis is now officially a cluster. Ten candidates would be too many, but Memphians are blessed with 28. At this rate, the winner may only get 20% of the vote. Hopefully, some of the candidates will drop out.

The first weekend of college football continues to roll today. Week 1 is known for blowouts against lesser competition, but Virginia Tech/Alabama and Georgia/Oklahoma State will be two top-notch early season match ups.

Week 1 picks
Rhodes over Westminster (MO)
Tennessee-Knoxville over Western Kentucky
Oklahoma State over Georgia
Virginia Tech over Alabama
Southern Miss over Alcorn State
Ole Miss over Memphis

Lots Of Music In Memphis This Weekend

If you are a music fan, this is a good weekend to be in Memphis. Two festivals headline a variety of music options.

The Memphis Music and Heritage Festival will have five stages Downtown (near Main Street and Peabody Place) from 11am-11pm on Saturday and Sunday. Headliners included Al Kapone, Bobby Rush, Amy LaVere, Blind Mississippi Morris and Susan Marshall. A wild card recommendation may be the Memphis Klezmer All-Stars. In addition to music, there will be cooking demonstrations, crafts and artists for your enjoyment. Admission is free.

The Delta Fair and Music Festival kicks off on Friday and continues through September 13. There is a variety of music this weekend, including an appearance by Eddie Money. Don't forget to check out the animal (ostrich and pig) races and mid-evil jousting while you are there.

On a more laid back level, The Moody Blues will be at the Memphis Botanic Garden on Friday and there will be free music all weekend at the Levitt Shell.

The Other Memphis College Football Team

Many Memphians seem to forget their are two NCAA football teams in the city. Everyone is well aware of Saturdays (and sometimes weeknights) at the Liberty Bowl with the Tigers, but the same cannot be said of the Lynx. Rhodes College opens up their 2009 campaign this weekend against Westminster (MO) College at Fargason Field located on the Rhodes campus.

Head Coach Joe White, entering his 13th season with the Rhodes, is regrouping his squad after a disappointing 4-6 season. This was the first losing season for the Lynx since 2005. White will be counting on junior linebacker Andrew Meier to lead the defense and senior running back Tom McMurray to guide the offense.

If you are looking for a low-cost, fun football afternoon, head to Midtown and checkout a game. Kickoff this weekend is set for 1pm.
