As expected, Memphis Tigers football coach Tommy West was relieved of his duties after a Monday morning meeting with A.D. R.C. Johnson. In a presser, West let it be known that unless there is a change in the status quo at Memphis, then the program will not improve. Basically, put Memphis coaches and players on the same playing field (technology, equipment and facilities) or drop the program.
If R.C. Johnson doesn't agree with West's comments, then Shirley Raines needs to step up and find an athletic director with the vision to take Memphis to the next level as an athletic department, not just basketball.
Some of the early names rumored to be interested in the Memphis football job are former Ole Miss and Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville, former Auburn and current North Alabama head coach Terry Bowden, former Southern Miss head coach Jeff Bower, current LSU assistant coach and Memphis alum Larry Porter, current Auburn assistant coach Trooper Taylor and current Oklahoma State assistant coach Gunther Brewer.
